The Polk County

Historical Society

MISSION STATEMENT: Preserving the past for future generations by collecting a unique and enduring collection of Polk County History shared with the public through programs, exhibits, and research.

The Polk County Historical Society was established in 1937 by a group of five Polk County residents.  Under an agreement with the County Administrators the Society was established to manage the preservation of the rich Polk County history and the housing of artifacts. The Polk County Historical Society, are the caretakers of the Polk County Museum-Old Courthouse, and rural Lanesdale Schoolhouse, both located in beautiful downtown Balsam Lake.

In 1975, the original one room Polk County Museum had the opportunity for growth when, a new Courthouse was built and they were offered the Old Courthouse. The Old Courthouse reopened as the Polk County Museum on July 4, 1976. The Courthouse, built in 1899, is a beautiful, Romanesque, three story building, listed in 1982 by The National Register of Historic Places. A three story addition was built onto the Museum, equipped with an elevator, allowing all visitors’ access to the Museum.

The Society tells the story of the Polk people; from the Courthouse Museum exhibits, representing the people and past industry that developed the Polk area, to the restored Lanesdale rural schoolhouse, representing past times that reflect on our lives today.

The Polk County Historical Society is a member of the Wisconsin Historical Society.
