Corn Selection Tips
Characteristics: When selecting corn products, yield is considered the most critical characteristic. Other characteristics such as emergence, vigor, stalk and root quality, drought tolerance, test weight, drydown and disease resistance all contribute to the final yield as well. Each farming operation requires a package of products with a specific set of characteristics to maximize yield and gross return per acre in any given year.
Multiple Maturities: Selecting several products with various maturities increases the genetic diversity used on an individual farm, and manages the risk associated with weather conditions that will occur in a given growing season. To lower risk, plant 25% of acres in early maturity products, 50% in medium maturity products and 25% in late maturity products for your area. This minimizes the chance of all products being affected by adverse growing conditions. in a given year.
Traits: After evaluating all of the key characteristics, the next decision is to consider other agronomic traits to make your operation more profitable. Consider corn traits that help protect your crops such as:
- YieldGard Corn Borer
- YieldGard Plus
- YieldGard Rootworm
When you stack these traits with Roundup Ready Corn 2 technology and use the Roundup Ready System, you have added value to your operation by providing safe , simple profitable weed control in your corn crop.
Once you know which maturities, characteristics and traits you need, you can select an Asgrow and DEKALB brand package that will meet the needs of your farming operation.
We have put together comparison schedules of the most productive varities of DEKALB seed corn for the growing conditions in the upper midwest. For additional information please contact Dale at (715) 646-1447 or info@westdaleseeds.com.
